Waterman—Duke: Ambassador of Aloha. Relatively few people outside Hawaii know the impact of Duke Kahanamoku (1890-1968). A five-time Olympic medalist, he broke swimming records, helped globalize surfing and was known as the “Ambassador of Aloha,” playing a vital part in supporting Hawaii’s fledgling tourist industry. This documentary, narrated by Jason Mamoa, traces his rise to fame, his battles against racism and his legacy as the face of a changing Hawaii. It features rare archival footage and interviews with surfers including Laird Hamilton, Kelly Slater and Carissa Moore. Waterman is streaming on PBS.
